This was a reunited lovers story, pure and simple. And since she was currently unemployed from her schoolteacher job, maybe if she tagged along, faced Denny again after almost 3 years.she could finally get some closure and move on with her life, and commit herself to another man. She knew her brother was planning a trip to Virgin River to visit Denny. And that's not good if you're thinking of marrying another man. Things were heading towards couldn't get Denny out of her mind. So she tried to move on with another man, someone more "appropriate" in her mother's eyes, a young law student with an ambitious future.
She couldn't put her heart through that again. Hurt, angry, prideful and miserable from all the worry Denny put her through, Becca gave him a "Dream on". But when he came back 2 years later after his tour was over (and his head was on straight), he realized he should've never let Becca go, and asked for another chance.
He reinlisted in the Marines while still grieving, deployed to Afghanistan and, not thinking entirely straight, broke up with Becca, thinking it would be better for her to see other men rather than wait for him. But then fate intervened- Denny's mom got sick and eventually died, and he pushed Becca away rather than let her help/comfort him. It was sort of a love/lust at first sight between those two-they dated for years while Becca was in college to become an elementary school teacher and while Denny eventually served in Iraq and it looked like they were headed for marriage once she graduated. You see, Rich and Denny were buddies who met while 19-year-old Marines, and that's how our heroine Becca first met Denny-when Rich brought him home with him one weekend. But once we got through all the necessary (and some not so necessary) details, and Denny and Becca start to talk about what happened to their relationship, then things started picking up. and a lot of time was spent on the Thanksgiving hunting/fishing expedition that Becca, her twin brother Rich, and his Marine buddies Troy and Dirk were taking at Virgin River. Although it's always a pleasure to read Robyn Carr's writing and to immerse yourself in the town of Virgin River (and to visit with your favorite characters again- meaning Jack), a lot of time was used to set up the backstory of Denny Cutler (first introduced in Promise Canyon) and his pretty blonde, 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Becca Timm-how they met, how/why they broke up, etc. I was a little worried about this one for a while becuase it (the romance) really didn't get going until about half way through.
